S4 EP5: why protests are not enough

LISTEN TO THIS EPISODE

Amanda Tattersall has built a career helping ordinary Australians team up and win, as co-founder of GetUp, founder of the Sydney Alliance, host of the ChangeMakers podcast, and author of the new book Conscious Tribes. She has never worked in domestic and family violence. That's exactly why she closes this season.

After five episodes with researchers, advocates and community builders, one message kept surfacing: prevention lives or dies with ordinary people. So for the finale, Kirrily sits down with the person who knows how ordinary people get organised, and turns everything this season has called for into something you can actually do.

She starts by taking apart the biggest myth in social change: that it takes someone extraordinary. Movements, she argues, don't start with strangers. They start with the people already around you, at work, at school, on your street. And she lands on the idea the whole season has been walking toward: connection comes first, and when more of us take part, everything else follows.

It's the final episode of the season, and it ends where we began: with an answer to the question episode one opened with. If we know so much about domestic and family violence, why haven't we ended it?

If anything in this episode feels close to home, 1800RESPECT is there any time, day or night, 1800 737 732.
