S4 EP5: The First Year in a New Country
Australia's answer to domestic and family violence has mostly been rescue, pulling people out after the damage is done. Vital work, but it doesn't stop the water rising. This episode is about working ...
What happens when someone learns, for the first time in their life, that violence at home is a crime? Aurelia Rahman watches that moment happen in her work, and she describes it as the moment a person discovers they have rights.
Aurelia is Head of Community Engagement and Relations at the Community Migrant Resource Centre, which has spent thirty years helping newly arrived migrants and refugees across western Sydney find their feet in a country where everything is unfamiliar: the language, the systems, even the idea that police are there to help.
She takes Kirrily inside the first year of a newly arrived family's life and the pressure it puts on a home, then reveals how prevention actually reaches these families. She shares how her teams rebuild trust in police, why the hardest people to reach are the men, and her belief that Australia could become the first country in the world to build communities free of family violence.
